The Society of Friends (or 'Quakers') was formed by George Fox (1624-1691), a shoemaker from Nottingham. In the 1640s Fox travelled throughout England delivering sermons in which he argued that individuals could have direct access to God without the need for churches, priests or other aspects of the established Church. Guiseley Meeting was recorded in 1665 as part of Skipton Monthly Meeting, and again in 1669 as part of Knaresborough Monthly Meeting. A group of Friends from Rawdon, Henry Whitacre, Samuel Marshall, Abraham and Edward Grimshaw, and Matthew and John Hargraves, were imprisoned in 1682 for refusal to swear the oath of allegiance.
